Aesthetically, I like this one. The design is strong and the blacks are really well done. It's really nice to look at.
Concept-wise, the "disease-y" parts are kind of less "clear" than they were in the sketch. I really got the sense of invading amoeba in the first one, not so much in the second one. If your idea was to reference a petrie-dish (not a bad one), maybe a clear outline around them (ie the glass) could have helped?
Remember that Art Directors don't like surprises. It's best to give them a very clearly outlined idea of what they're going to get in the sketch.
I strongly agree with Jillain's comment. Although the pattern is richer and more beautifully detailed, perhaps the easily recognizable forms of amoeba have been lost.
yeah i see what you guys mean. i think the reason that the sketch and final are different is because i sketched it in the wrong orientation. i like how in the sketch the "invasion" was more subtle and hill like, but it didn't work very well once i tried to translate it vertically. so i just ended up making them taller and more ball like. eh.
That said, still a really nice looking piece.
