this is for the letters to the editor about a lack of drug treatment given to convicts. i didn't want to do something as literal as the example, so what do you think?

Hey Zack-
Definitely a dramatic piece. May be too "scary" for a more conservative paper, but for other clients, the tone may be right.
This may just be me, but the lined paper gives cause for confusion, because I read it as a symbol for school and education. If you flipped the lines so they ran up and down, it'd be a great piece about abuse in schools or academic bullying or something like that.
The esoteric nature of the piece (primarily depicting anguish and pain and inferred addiction) may work for some people and I would include it as an option. Most editorial clients would want to see a stronger hint towards actual drugs... whether that be a giant pill or his eyes, the background a mosaic of drug stuff, or maybe a razor somewhere in the picture. Just a little push further.
yeah i used the lined paper for that reason, to bring up the idea of education in drug abuse prevention and treatment. i also used it because it made it sort of dirtier and less precious.
i was going to put some drug paraphernalia in the background but i thought maybe it would be too full or busy. i think i'm going to revise it though and add some more hints towards actual drugs, so it could work better on its own without the article next to it.
